Z Kopce - Big Beat (Panton - 1989)

This is a preposterously great record that I picked up today based solely on the cover art and the fact that I couldn't understand any of the liner notes. After doing some research, I've discovered that Z Kopce were a Czech band led by polymath-weirdo Petr Váša. Big Beat was their first record. Angular, playful post-punk with acidic vocals and shades of European avant-garde composition, Big Beat is one of the best records I've ever come across by accident.

Vilyat Khan & Bismillah Khan - Duets From India (Capitol - 1967)

Three stunningly beautiful ragas from Vilyat Khan on sitar, Bismillah Khan on shehnai, and Shanta Prasad accompanying them both on tabla. Side two opener "Chaiti-Dhun" is my personal favorite - "a typically lilting folk tune of India's Uttar Pradesh region," according to the liner notes. Joyous and mournful, this record is one of the most enduring pieces of music in my collection. Enjoy.

The Gospel Music Workshop of America Mass Choir - Recorded 'Live' in Detroit, Michigan (Savoy - 1978)

This is one of the absolute best gospel records I own. Unceasing, soul-stirring goodness from "approximately 1500 voices...captured here 'LIVE' for gospel posterity." The high point, for me, is definitely Side 4's opener, "I Want to be Ready."

SIDE 1
Purge me with Hyssop
Take Me Through
Glory and Honor

SIDE 2
Ye That Believe in God
Now I'm Glad I'm Free
I Want to be Filled

SIDE 3
Heart and Soul
When Jesus Comes
I've Got to Ride That Glory Bound Train
I'm Not the Same Anymore

SIDE 4
I Want to be Ready
Let the Good Shine Through
I've Got a Right to Praise the Lord
Keep Your Hands on the Plow

Welcome

Hey Gang,

Over the years I've been amassing a substantial collection of obscure records, many of which I've never seen shared anywhere on this wonderful, apocalyptic hellscape we call "the Internet." So, I figured I'd start spreading some of these recordings around for all to enjoy. I'm aiming to post one record a week...maybe I'll up the frequency if I can get around to it.

If you enjoy the selections on this blog, please check out the If You Lose Your Horse radio program, streaming online on WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio every Monday night from 8-11 pm (CT). You can expect an exciting, upsetting menagerie of pleasing songs and sounds live on America's last great radio station.

Well, that's all for now.

Love and space,
Sam
